About

BlankHotel is a project and artistic pseudonym of Dieter Truppel, whose work aims to captivate the senses and challenge conventions. With an academic background in graphic design and 15 years of experience as an art director, the artist, during the onset of the pandemic, directs his attention towards a series of experiments that quickly gain momentum and evolve into the expressive work presented here. By adapting a series of illustrations, he finds in this paper cutouts technique a way to create delicate and sensitive representations with an erotic theme. Images that were once considered provocative and explicit, with an erotic touch, are given new life through the contrast between the fragile and raw material of paper and the visceral expression of the erotic.

The artist's fascination lies in the contrast and interaction between the power of an image with erotic undertones and the fragility of paper as a creative material. By manipulating the paper with care and precision, it becomes possible to compose works that invite the viewer to a closer and more detailed appreciation. The paper, with its subtle presence in the finished pieces, exerts control over the visual experience, reserving the emotional impact of the erotic for an intimate and personal appreciation.

BlankHotel's work is influenced by artists who traverse the erotic realm with different visions, including Tom of Finland, Paul Freeman, Don Bachardy, and George Bataille, helping shape their artistic voice. The playful and surreal universe is also notable among their references. These influences are perceptible in their compositions, but the artist goes beyond, exploring the fragility and particularities of paper to create a unique artistic expression.

Paper assumes a prominent position in the artworks, imposing itself delicately and determining the rules of handling and viewer perception. It is a collaborative process where the artist must submit to the whims of their own raw material, much like we often submit to our own desires.

The artwork invites the viewer to immerse themselves in a world where the erotic is reinterpreted, transforming into something delicate, sensitive, and intriguing. What may be less visible from afar becomes an intimate conversation when observed up close. That is why BlankHotel is an invitation to contemplation and intimate appreciation.
